What is a laser-wire?
The future International Linear Collider (ILC) will require very small electron beams to achieve the expected luminosity. Achieving a good resolution on micrometer sized beams or even smaller beam is not possible with conventionnal methods. Thus we are experimenting a new technique: we sweep a laser beam accross the electron's path and measure the compton photons produced by the interaction between the laser photons and the electrons. The distribution of the compton photons gives the size of the beam.

The Oxford laser-wire group
The Oxford laser-wire group is a member of the Laser Based Beam Diagnostics (LBBD) collaboration.
The group has setup a laser laboratory to prepare the laser-wire that will be installed at the ILC. The group is also leading the installation of a laser-wire at the ATF extraction line and contributing to another setup installed on the PETRA ring at DESY.
